Reflection as a learner is a tricky skill to master, especially you are 5 years old. One of the ways that I am assisting my students in their writing is a Bump It Up Board.

The students are given a list of objectives or Writing Goals. At the moment these are learning to:

Correct Letter Formation

Using finger spaces

Use full stops and capital letters in the correct places

Using known sight words

Obviously each student is on their own journey, so not each student has the same goals at the same time. As they develop, so will these goals, but for now, these are what the students are working on.

The writing samples are presented on the Bump It Up Board. They are unnamed but have the goals for each writing sample on it. At the moment we are working on becoming "WOW!" writers. This strategy helps students self monitor their work to ensure it meets the guidelines. They can compared their work to a known leveled sample, and see how they can improve their work.
